Kama Sutra… Koobface? Believe it or not these two things are not unrelated. They are two ways criminal hackers are trying to get to you this Valentine ’s Day.
The “Kama Sutra powerpoint” arrives as spam in your inbox. The deck contains images NSFW (not safe for work) but also installs malware on your computer.
Pretty safe to say that you shouldn’t open a .ppt (PowerPoint) file that isn’t from someone you know. Also a good bet not to open one from a friend that has been forwarded.
One recent example of this is the Koobface worm recently targeted Match.com users by sending messages that appeared to be from users of the site. The messages invited them to look at photos and videos on a Match.com look-a-like site via a link.
When users tried to log in to the malicious site, it recorded their usernames and passwords and attempted to install a Trojan. This is a common tactic and reason to be very careful not to sign in to a website after clicking on a link that someone has sent you. A recent version of this threat installs the Troj/Bckdr-RFM Trojan – make sure your comprehensive security suite is up to date and run a scan to detect and remove it.
Valentines are always sweet, but Ecards from spammers can leave you with an infected computer. This year, the attention grabbing subject lines may be “The Perfect Valentine’s Day Gift!” and contain a link to a dangerous website looking to get personal information or download a virus to your computer.
Remember to look carefully at email to make sure it comes from someone you know rather than the mysterious “someone you love”. Misspelled words are often a tip-off that the email is not legit.
Tips
1–NEVER EVER click on links in emails or eCards from people you do not know
2–When you receive an eCard, check the destination address of the link to make sure it is going to a legitimate eCard site – if you don’t trust it, DO NOT click it
3–To help protect you from malware, use a comprehensive security software, such as McAfee Total Protection, and keep it up-to-date
Happy Valentine’s Day and stay safe out there!
