Though I pretend to be above all things mundane like posing for pics with celebs (Only the star-struck teens do it, for God’s sake!), I do try to keep up with their latest capers. It’s good timepass and provides fodder for an afternoon gossip with friends. I confess I do like to download songs from movies featuring my favourite actors. So imagine my shock when I came across the findings of the 2011 McAfee survey that listed the celebrities responsible for maximum malware and virus attacks when their names are searched online!
The findings throw up some interesting results. The three leading female actors in Bollywood, Katrina Kaif, Deepika Padukone and Kareena Kapoor have been ranked as the top three dangerous Indian celebrities online in 2011!
Other celebrities who made it to the list are Saif Ali Khan, John Abraham, Priyanka Chopra, Aishwarya Rai, Bipasha Basu, Aamir Khan and Shahrukh Khan in that order.
Incidentally, in 2009, Yuvraj and Aishwarya Rai led the pack of dangerous Indian celebrities online.
The biggest threats are downloads, whether they be free wallpapers, songs or video clips. These often include a little cookie that will quietly be installed in your PC and corrupt the hard disc. Some cyber criminals also derive their daily amusements from inventing new malware that wipes off your PC memory or worse, use it for their own vicious purposes! These can even turn your computer into a zombie, manipulate your files, or corrupt your OS! Find out more on how malware can cause harm here.
I was immediately worried about having been a victim, given my propensity to sneak on the lives of the matinee idols, but my PC is safe, all thanks to McAfee Family Protection software. The McAfee Site Advisor checks for the authenticity of a site and the software blocks suspicious or dangerous sites. When the software warns me that the site I am about to visit might contain material that is harmful to the PC, I navigate away from it. That simple!
See below to get an idea of how the SiteAdvisor works. The green ‘tick’ indicates that the URL is safe, while the red “cross” marks it as an unsafe site. So, all you have to do is avoid clicking on the red crossed site.

What you can do is:
- Install a similar software on all your internet-enabled gadgets
- Refrain from downloading content from unknown sources
- Do not open attachments without verifying sources
- Don’t give in to the temptation of receiving freebies like wallpapers, movies, songs
- Don’t click on pics or titles with lurid messages like “Red hot scenes of Katrina”
- Report spam, it will help everyone
- Continually update all the patches that your security software recommends
As I keep saying, your safety is in your own hands or mouse if you like. If you want pics of celebs, buy magazines; if it is music you want, buy a CD. Avoid all free posters, music like plague. Much better than crashing your PC, isn’t it? Or just install a comprehensive security software, heed the warnings, and stay safe.
