Igor Muttik just had a parcel arrive whilst I was nearby. McAfee has just won the Lowest False Alarm Rate award from AV Comparatives for VirusScan.
….I didn’t stay for the speech
For those who do not know, false alarms are caused where an anti-virus product detects a clean file as infected and is something all AV companies try hard to avoid. Recognition that we’ve got the lowest false alarm rate on test is awesome.

I’m also worried about McAfee’s false alarms about files compressed with PECompact.
I help small businesses secure their data, and I will recommend against using McAfee because of false alarms against PECompact compressed files.
Why? Because some of my company’s software is going to be compressed using PECompact 2.98 in March 2009 and I don’t need the support hassle caused by McAfee’s false alarms.
It still seems like just about every executable handled with PECompact (i. e. thousands of innocent programs!) is falsely accused of being a “Generic.dx” trojan by McAfee. Will this ever be fixed? E. g. Kaspersky has no problem unpacking PECompact and analysing the actual program, instead of false alarming on the compressor…
Congrats! I’ve been a loyal McAfee user for years. Glad to see a great product get recognition.
One detection name – many problems:
generic.dx
Somehow I don’t think Avert will win the award again next year.
Wow. Really? Other AV products muse be really bad at false positives for McAfee to win the top spot.
Congratulations
FP is going to be a really hot topic this year onwards.
Pretty ironic, considering I just spent most of this weekend dealing with a false-positive alarm due to the 5498 and 5499 DAT files.
