This MacDefender popped up as I was attempting to download an ‘unzip for Mac’ program, and wouldn’t go away. In attempting to click it away, apparently it was activated. Immediately, porn sites started popping up; over and over, no stopping them. Using your advice, it appears to now be gone. While searching for help to remove it, another site offered me their download with which to accomplish what you’ve done for me for free! Am ever so grateful!
yes i was fooled twice and purchased the programs to rid myself of these nasty viruses , what a fool i was , wow!!! anyway they got 120.00 from me and then a couple of weeks ago my hard drive failed , trip to the apple store new hard drive 5.0 and 235.00 dollars later i have my mac again and will not be fooled again , thank you for your information , wish i would have researched better before i made a foolish decision ……. thank you very much , darryl
Mac is not impenetrable, I think we all knew that but the threat of system software conflicts posed a greater threat to Mac users, until recently.
I’ve owned a Mac for twenty years, I recently (December ’10) purchased a 17″ MacBook Pro, it ran like dream for a week or so until a friend connected her iPod to my sweet machine, the problems were minor initially, I didn’t make the connection, just thought I needed tech support to help configure new software. The problems continued to spread until April of this year, when the Mac Genius’ squad finally gave up. The entire system was so corrupt they could not reboot it after they stripped and rebuilt the OS. I left the Apple Store with a brand new laptop that day.
I have a theory, at least I am wondering if the rising threat of viruses to Mac OS users is related in some way to the widely used smaller Mac divices like the IPhone , Itouch and IPod?
IPod?

My computer is infected with MacProtector. I have tried deleting the file but was unsuccessful. I have since purchased McAfee Cyber Security but a recent scan did not find any viruses or problems.
Does McAfee have an update to remove this?
I was a victim of this virus, and couldn’t get rid of it until after I went to the activity monitor, stopped its functioning, and then went back to the applications folder and deleted it. It was a real problem for a few days with interminable pop-ups, spontaneous start-ups of Safari to gay porn and other porn sites, as well as internet Viagra sites. Glad I was able to rid myself of this problem with the help of this article.
should I change my id and password for Mac? I gave them my credit card info to purchase this bogus item–what to do? can I get my money back? I did call the credit card company almost as soon as I bought this. Would appreciate advice.
Thanks.
I’m unable to delete MacProtector from my Applications folder. I get the following message: “The item “MacProtector” can’t be moved to the Trash because it’s open.”
As I am not well-versed on many aspects of mac use I don’t know how to “kill” the MacProtector process. Can you please help?
thanks so much for the advice on how to delete this virus. i had to open up the activity monitor etc. how awful!
