Managing your portfolio of social media sites can be very demanding. By the time you have checked your newsfeeds, replied to messages and posted witty updates across Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and even Tumblr (several times a day), there is little time left for anything else.
So, are you using your social networking time efficiently? Is your time online spent purely socialising? Could you be getting more from social media?
Social media has great positives including job networking, family connections and entertainment. While many of us would be happy to spend copious hours a day on social media, this just isn’t possible for most of us. Work, study, kids and sheer reality means this just ain’t going to happen. So, we need to be a little more strategic about identifying what we need from social media and then choosing how and where we spend our time online accordingly.
Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t expect you to develop a ‘personal social media needs plan’ just simply use common sense. For example, if you are keen to socialise online, keep your corporate profile relevant and active, and also network with some ‘like-minded’ types then you might choose to spend your time on Facebook, LinkedIn and Google Plus.
If however, you like to keep on top of news and trends, are a mad photographer then you might prefer a Twitter and Instagram combination.
I believe it is time for a mindshift. It is time to re-evaluate the way we spend our time on social media. So, identify what is important to you, firm up your life goals and then go forth and find the social media sites that will help you get there!!!
Here are some Social Media Sites that might just fit into your plan:
Facebook – Facebook is the world’s largest social network with more than 900 million users. If socialising is one of your goals this is probably where you should direct some time.
LinkedIn – LinkedIn is a social networking site for business professionals. With over 225 million subscribers, this is where you want to be focussing some energy if you are looking to maximise your network or change jobs. Recruiters regularly use LinkedIn to find candidates for positions.
Google + – Google+ is a social networking site owned by Google. It is the 2nd largest social networking site with approximately 360 million users. It is commonly regarded as a site to meet new friends as opposed to reconnecting with older ones. The site also encourages intellectual matches and encourages users to share meaningful content.
Twitter – Twitter is an online social networking and ‘microblogging’ service that allows users to send and read ‘tweets’ or messages limited to 140 characters. Twitter is a great tool for staying abreast of what is happening in the world, trends and industry developments. A must have in your social media chest!
Instagram – is an online photo-sharing, video-sharing and social networking service. Not only does Instagram allow you to socialise and be creative, you can also follow industry leaders and influencers which could be career enhancing!
